We are putting the final touches on set design, the sound tracks and costuming. In the final weeks of rehearsal we are going through the pain of ‘coming off book”, or losing the script which requires more than considerable patience. It’s always a difficult transition because one might want to direct students to speak up, enunciate, fix blocking, work on characterization. But it only frustrates and hinders because it overwhelms. We focus on memorizing words and blocking. We ask parents to please help students at home, usually with good results. If we get to production week with a memorized play and basic blocking in place we feel we are in a good place. We have the advantage of working with young minds that learn quickly so fine tuning during the week gets us to a finished product by Friday night opening.
