2015 Season

Mark the dates for our annual play festival: May 1 at 6:30 p.m., May 2 at 2:00 & 7:00 p.m. Tickets and reservations will open in March of 2015. Check back here on our blog to get updates on our year-long process!

Summer auditions: we’ve been auditioning through the summer for next year’s classes and have two more scheduled in the next few weeks. We audition in order to make sure students and parents understand the process of participating in a full-blown production. Participating means showing up, doing your homework and becoming part of a team that needs everyone fully engaged because we will rehearse for a performance in each class as well as learn about acting. Students will go through an entire process by the time the year is over.

There are five levels of classes, with the youngest taking Creative Dramatics, a 15-week, 30-minute class (four sections ranging from age six to eight). Acting 1 serves ages 9-11 and Acting 2-4 ranges from 12-18.  Each level will challenge the student with more difficult material and Acting 4, considered a ‘master class’, usually studies a Shakespearean comedy. Last year we performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, our first operetta, in order to focus more on voice training (breath control, diction and projection) through singing. The movement and dances challenged students to become more aware of posture and poise. We see students returning year after year and when they get through Shakespeare we see some performers rivaling those in any decent college program.

By the time we are finished auditioning, we will have seen almost 100 students for the Acting 1-4 classes.

2015 Selections:

Totally RED! by Dinah Toupes

Totally RED! begins with a humorous version of Little Red Riding Hood in storybook theatre style. Then it continues with retellings told in multiple styles: melodrama (The Perils of Being Miss Red); Elizabethan (Much Ado About Red); ’80s hip-hop slang (REDz in the Hood); and avant-garde (Call the Moment RED). There is also a scene in American musical style, RED! The Musical! CYTP performed Totally RED! in 2010 and became one of our most successful productions!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare

A Midsummer Night’s Dream portrays the adventures of four young people and a group of six amateur actors who are run amuck by fairies who inhabit a wondrous forest. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world. This is a 75-minute version in the original language that will feature the many musical talents of our students.
